2. Waste Categories Explained: What’s Accepted, Fees, and Locations
Garbage
Accepted Items:
General household waste, small items, and non-recyclable, non-hazardous materials. Specific examples include food waste, non-recyclable plastics, broken furniture, and other small household items.
Not Accepted:
Hazardous chemicals, biomedical waste, large construction materials (like full-size concrete blocks or asphalt), electronic items, yard waste, and any mixed recyclables.
Fees:
Minimum fee of $18 for loads under 100 kg; for larger loads, it’s $176.39 per tonne.
Accepted Locations: All Toronto Drop-Off Depots.
Additional Notes: All garbage must be securely packed. Loads need to be properly covered to prevent littering during transport.
Yard Waste
Accepted Items:
Includes organic waste from gardens, such as leaves, small branches, tree trunks (cut to size), weeds, brush, mulch, pumpkins, corn stalks, and Christmas trees (in January).
Not Accepted:
Grass clippings, sod, soil (weeds with excess soil removed are okay), and invasive species (must be disposed of in garbage to prevent spreading).
Fees:
Free for loads under 20 kg. Loads over 20 kg are $132.29 per tonne.
Accepted Locations: Available at all Drop-Off Depots except Victoria Park.
Additional Notes: Yard waste collected is composted, contributing to Toronto’s waste diversion efforts. For larger branches, cut them to appropriate sizes before drop-off.
Renovation Waste
Accepted Items:
Waste from home renovations, including drywall (only clean, under 1 tonne), bathtubs, lumber (under 4 feet in length), shingles, siding, insulation, plaster, pressure-treated wood, baseboards, cabinets, countertops, doors, and fencing.
Not Accepted:
Full loads of concrete, bricks, soil, sod, rock, paving stones, asbestos, and any metal larger than 4 feet.
Fees:
Minimum $18 fee for loads under 100 kg; larger loads are $176.39 per tonne.

Additional Notes: Ensure nails, screws, and metal fasteners are removed before disposal. Drywall is limited to 1 tonne per drop-off and must be free from contaminants.

Additional Notes: Removing batteries from electronics when possible is recommended. Electronic waste items help Toronto recycle valuable metals and materials, diverting them from landfills.
Household Hazardous Waste
